High impact induction package delivered to British Waterways

With the need to provide consistent training to large numbers of staff in diverse locations, British Waterways, the public corporation which cares for 2,000 miles of canals and rivers, has just rolled out its new induction training package, following close collaboration with e-learning leaders BYG Systems.
The training for all new staff has been conceived with British Waterways' company ethos as a key factor. All joining personnel are made to feel included - part of the family. There is ample opportunity for the learner to find out not only about the history of the company but also the plans for its future.
With strong emphasis on motivation, self development and information retention, BYG and British Waterways highlighted the topics suitable for e-learning as part of a blended solution and 6 modules were subsequently created in a lively, conversational style with graphics and photography representing real-world working situations and including interactive activities to test the learner. The information provided is comprehensive but personalised by the use of video clips of British Waterways' executives encouraging the learner to develop a virtual relationship with key personnel as well as company locations. The addition of quiz material makes the learning more fun.
Isobel Wright, British Waterways' Assistant Personnel Manager Training, explains: "British Waterways employs around 2,000 staff in England, Wales and Scotland. Their roles are extremely diverse, from lock keepers, engineers and hyrdologists to ecologists, heritage experts and customer service personnel. A clear introduction to our complex organisation and responsibilities is vital for new employees and we had to be confident that our chosen partner for helping to make changes to our induction training could deliver the courses on time and in a format that was compatible with our infrastructure. We are delighted with the results we've achieved so far working with BYG and look forward to continuing to work together to achieve the best results for our people."
Aware of tight timescales and corporate requirements, BYG had to deliver a cost-effective product both for today's needs and tomorrow's updates and upgrades. A number of assets were created which were suitable for re-use when converting existing learning materials in the future, such as learning activities, course branding, photo libraries, navigation and tracking functionality. Re-usable templates were designed for easy implementation of screens.
"We were delighted to have the opportunity to establish this strong working relationship with British Waterways."
Says Joe Bennaton, Operations Director at BYG Systems.
