IOSH award for RBS encompassing BYG’s online Health and Safety modules
November, 2009
The IOSH (Institute Of Occupational Safety and Health) awards for 2009 included two trophies for the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) as ‘Best Training Initiative’ and for ‘Best Achievement in Retail and Leisure’. The awards were recently presented at a ceremony at the London Hilton Hotel, attended by over 600 guests that included directors, managers and personalities from the UK Health and Safety world.
The RBS ‘Think Safety’ programme encompasses an interactive suite of online training modules (designed and developed by BYG Systems) and a campaign inspired by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.
The key risk areas identified by RBS were asbestos; managing safely; slips, trips and falls; fire safety; manual handling; and display screen equipment. The main aims of the programme were: to encourage staff, define a clear identity for health and safety and promote it as something dynamic and worth getting involved in; and equip RBS staff with the skills and knowledge required to recognise, understand and reduce risks at work, play, and home. The company developed a ‘twin track’ approach: one to raise awareness, the other to drive competency. For the former, a series of A4-sized guidance cards was developed, inspired by Jamie Oliver’s style of cooking – simple, stripped back to basics, yet still packing a punch.
To develop competency, a suite of five interactive, online learning modules were created to cover the key risks, with one module developed exclusively for managers. Currently some 30,000 people across almost 3,000 locations within RBS’ retail businesses are accessing and using the ‘Jamie’ modules. The judges call it an ambitious initiative, involving training, as well as communication, to seek culture change via innovative, effective, engaging, measured improvements.
For the ‘Think Safety’ campaign, BYG’s graphic design team, in collaboration with RBS, developed a visual identity and a logo for the initiative. Our instructional design team ensured that the e-learning modules were clear, punchy and interactive, so that the large RBS population connected with the programme from the start.
These awards are yet another recognition of BYG’s commitment to providing creative, forward thinking e-learning and communication initiatives for global organisations.
