New Media provides a solution for Bhs training requirement

October, 2000

When Bhs needed to train 12,000 staff on a new EPOS system, they combined the impact of multimedia with the delivery mechanism of their Intranet for cost effectiveness, quality and consistency.

BYG Systems worked in partnership with Bhs to develop the multimedia training application, which incorporates interactive rollovers, photographs, animation and in-built assessment. This runs across Bhs's internal network via a web browser, which enables simultaneous access by thousands of users.

Staff select Auto route or Manual route to guide them through the training. They are then able to learn the mechanics of the EPOS system, its security and benefits, before actual use on the shop floor.

A key feature of the system is the continuous assessment, which is prompted at the log on screen, and tracks progress of the individual. This assessment includes a case study which asks users to complete a simple cash transaction in front of Mr X. The customer's blood pressure is displayed on a scale, and raises with every mistake made. A succession of mistakes results in him leaving the store, and the user being made to review their training thus far!

Says Stewart Kendall, Bhs Business Systems Manager "We chose the Intranet approach as it offered a method of delivering the training media in a modern style using screen shots from the application, active links and hot spots on the screen to prompt different information and actions dependent on the trainees' needs. By implementing this ahead of the EPOS rollout it creates the opportunity for sales associates to become familiar with the look and feel of their new POS system and should make the subsequent training more receptive ".
